Gemologist. Designer. Jeweler. Collector of beautiful things with a past.

I’ve spent much of my life around gemstones, jewelry and the wonderfully strange things the earth creates when given enough time.

I’m drawn to things with character. A gemstone so beautiful it looks like a piece of candy I want to eat. An ammonite that has been carrying its spiral around for millions of years. A thistle that manages to be beautiful while warning you not to get too comfortable. Perfect is lovely. Interesting is better.

That idea became The Gem & Thistle.

I came to design through gemology, but also through the bench. I’ve spent years with jewelry in my hands, not just looking at it through a loupe. Working at the bench taught me how metal behaves, how stones need to be set and protected, how proportions feel when a piece is actually worn, and occasionally how spectacularly an idea on paper can refuse to cooperate in metal.

That experience still shapes the way I design.

Gemology taught me to understand what a stone is. The bench taught me to respect what it takes to build around it. Design gives me permission to ask what it could become.

Sometimes a piece begins with an extraordinary gemstone. Sometimes it starts with a fossil, a botanical form, an old object, a memory, or some peculiar little detail that gets lodged in my imagination and refuses to leave.

I like natural forms, evidence of age and things that aren't quite perfect. I like whimsy sitting next to serious craftsmanship. And I want the finished piece to feel as though perhaps it already had a history before you found it.

Because ultimately, I don't want to make jewelry that ends with the person who buys it.

I want to make the pieces a daughter reaches for because she remembers seeing them on her mother. The ring a son keeps because he knows the story behind it. Jewelry that collects scratches, celebrations, ordinary Tuesdays and entire lives before eventually belonging to someone new.

Not simply jewelry to own.
Future heirlooms with a past still to come.
